Big Green Egg Weekly: Happy Egg-A-Versary To Us

Outside of my kids and my wife, the Big Green Egg is one of my most favourite things.

It was just over a year ago when that beautiful green piece of art was dropped on my deck. The joy and great food it has provided us cannot even be measured. The price was steep but in a short time, the Big Green Egg has already paid for itself (in my opinion).

I am a lucky guy. My wife bought it for me last year after I toilet trained our son. Yep, you heard me. She bought me the best BBQ/smoker you can buy to show her appreciation. So not only do I have the best wife going, I also have the best BBQ.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Big Green Egg, it is an all-in-one cooking machine. It is a smoker, a grill, an oven and a piece of art. Regardless of whether there is smoke funneling out of it, people stop and stare at in on my deck. I should mention there is a walking trail behind our house.

The smell of meat and wood chips radiates for what seems like miles. Neighbours certainly know when I am cooking a feast.

Chicken Thighs On The Big Green Egg

You can’t get a better ratio of price to taste than cooking up a batch of chicken thighs on the Big Green Egg. It seems our grocery store is always having a sale on chicken thighs and until I started smoking them, I was never a big fan.

But now, for a $5 pack of chicken thighs, I can turn it into a meal that would easily go for $20+ in a restaurant. (Fun 2024 update – wow, imagine if a pack of chicken thighs was still $5 for one pack.)

How do I do it? Well, it is all about the dry rub and the powers of the Big Green Egg.

Review: Woody’s Bar-B-Q In Dartmouth

This week to celebrate my last day of work before parental leave starting, we decided to go out for dinner. It had to be somewhere family friendly and somewhere close to my work. So Dartmouth Crossing seemed to be perfect. We also wanted to try somewhere new.

Add it all up and we went to Woody’s Bar-B-Q. I had heard of it as one of the now-many BBQ joints in the HRM. We have been to Boneheads and Q, so it was time to try a third. All I knew going it was it was more of a chain restaurant but that was it.

We found it pretty easy and I went to check the menu to make sure it was family friendly. Check, it was.

On a side note before I begin, the parking lots in Dartmouth Crossing are very dangerous. We witnessed a few cars motor through there at an unnecessary speed. So holding the boys tight, we headed it.

Both the atmosphere and decor were cottage bar-like. Lots of wood it seemed to me and the place was not that busy, which we really like.

We seated ourselves and the car seat fit into the booth, which again, does not always happen.

Now if you are parents of young kids, restaurant trips are big treats and really the only thing you are praying for is an experience that has some movement to it, ie. quick seating, quick order taking and quick turnaround in the kitchen. The more delays, the more you are asking for trouble.

Well from the time we sat down, it was slower than the meat they were slow cooking out back.
