Friday Newsletter – What is going on with Toronto sports?

Every Friday I fire off a list of things I think you need to know. Want me to know something in return? Leave it in the comments.

Happy Friday gang, we made it again. While it was a short week in terms of work for some, a lot was going on as we switched to April. The one thing that has been on my mind for a lot of the week, is how sad it has become (again) to be a Toronto sports fan. The Raptors are an absolute mess and I am pretty sure are trying to lose every game they can. The Maple Leafs are plodding towards the playoffs where we expect them to flame out in the early rounds again.

Then you have the Blue Jays. Normally the start of the season is full of promise and dreams. Not this season it seems. The bitter taste of how last year ended has clearly carried over and it looks like little has changed.

The Jays can’t hit. That’s a problem. They have already been no-hit this season and the body language doesn’t look great. I tend to listen to the sage advice of the biggest Jays fan in my life and not put much into it until June. But if there was ever a time to panic, the first week of Jays baseball has been it. Ross Atkins did not make the changes needed. In fact, I think they took a step back. If the pitching follows, this could be a long season in the AL East. I am curious just how red John Schneider’s face is going to get. But at least the team has been pushing the new food and new seats at Rogers Centre ahead of the home opener on Monday.

Is Toronto FC any good? Maybe they are our only hope? How about getting on that WNBA team?

Now for the rest of what’s going on.

TV Time – Now for something that comes through in the clutch when there are runners on base. Good TV shows. The year started off slow with a few hits, but as the calendar flipped to April, there are a lot of quality series coming down the pipe. This week, there is Ripley on Netflix. It’s a series based on the hit, The Talented Mr. Ripley, which is a fave of mine. There is Fallout on Prime and ending the month, The Veil on FX. Looking ahead, June appears to be the month when TV goes crazy. Check out this lineup:

  • The Boys (S4)
  • The Bear (S3)
  • Mayor of Kingstown (S3)
  • The Acolyte
  • Clipped
  • Presumed Innocent
  • House of the Dragon (S2)
  • Orphan Black: Echoes

Figures I was getting ready to cancel a few streaming services. Welcome back peak TV?

Finally, this Sunday, one of my favourite shows is coming to an end. Curb Your Enthusiasm will make us all feel awkward one last time. It’s sad to see it go, I wonder what will be next for Larry D? Of interest as the finale is apparently an ode to the Seinfeld finale that had a lot of harsh feedback even though Larry was happy with it. Did you know the Seinfeld finale drew almost 73 million viewers?? For comparison, the GOT finale which I thought everyone watched, checked in around 19 million. Also, 2023’s big in the moment, moment TV show, Succession, had 3 million. Crazy stuff.

March (or April) Madness – College hoops will come to an end this weekend for both the men and the women. The ladies play tonight and Sunday and the men are tomorrow and Monday.

Here are my picks.

Women

Final Four games – South Carolina over NC State | Iowa over UCONN

Final – Iowa over South Carolina

Men

Final Four games – Purdue over NC State | UCONN over Alabama

Final – UCONN over Purdue

Also, this was pretty cool.

From the “X”

Complaint Corner – Shocker, I don’t really have a complaint this week. At least nothing new. I am still pretty annoyed at grocery shopping and the cost of buying food. The boys are even noticing the size of food packages or the amounts in the bag.

Also, I don’t get the hype over the solar eclipse on Monday. Maybe I am just getting to that age where I have lost touch of what get’s people excited?

The miserable weather, yeah that has me down this week. Where is the sun?

And Finally

I do hope you survive Monday’s big event. I will see all the pictures after.

Also, I can’t sign off for the week without showing you something yummy.
