Day 56: The NBA Season Is Over, Let Summer Begin

The PL stands for Parental Leave, which I am currently doing for six months.

Another catch up day on the PL Daily. Yesterday was another long day thanks to the NBA and their need to start games so late. I was going to blog before the game but by the time the boys were asleep, it was time for me to hit the couch. No worries, I can remember most of what happened yesterday. I am not that old yet. The weather has finally changed over to summer with a great deal of sun and warmth. Charlie and I got our fill yesterday with a long trail walk and then more sun playing outside. Day 56 was pretty normal when looking at the big picture but I have to say, Charlie is gearing up for some big stuff. He is slowly starting to figure out how to move around and that will make for a lot of fun.

Yes, the NBA season is over. No I was not happy with the outcome. But the good news is no more nights of staying up until 1 am. My body says thank you for that.

On with the show.

Day 54: Very, Very Late Night Thanks To LeBron

One of the things that is hardest for this dad staying home is the pain I feel when I stay up late to watch sports. Our boys don’t care. They are still getting up around 6:30 or 7 am. There is no sympathy for dad being tired. They want breakfast just like every other day. Last night Day 54 went into overtime both in life and in the game I was watching. The Miami Heat beat the San Antonio Spurs 103-100 in OT and that means I will have to do it all once more tomorrow night for Game 7. Living in Nova Scotia means that games don’t start until 10pm. That is a killer. But I still watch and stress and enjoy the hell out of NBA basketball. In my next life I am living on the West coast where the games are over by 9 pm. Other than that it was a pretty quiet day on the PL.

Day 53: Hey Dad My Pants Don’t Fall Down

Oh Monday, how you always seem to kick my ass. There never seems to be enough time in the day on a Monday to do everything you intended. I am not sure if it is cause I have both boys on a Monday, or is it just digging out from a fun weekend? Either way, I only got through half my list and even made some brain farts like handing my wife mayo when she asked for margarine at dinner. Maybe it was a Father’s Day hangover as many dads were calling it today? Regardless, the weather was sunny and a lot of fun was had. There was even a new belt being worn by a certain growing boy.

Wow that is sure a tease for Day 53 riding the PL.

Dear Companies – Dads Want To Take Paternity Leave Too

As a dad currently on parental leave from my job in marketing, I have become very aware of the topic of dads staying home, while moms are going out and becoming the primary bread-winners. I am also becoming very aware of how the dads who do take leave from work are being treated in the business world.

The bottom line is, there is still a long way to go to even come close to how it is an accepted norm for moms.

Companies of all sizes need to better accept and welcome dads who want to do paternity leave. It is as simple as that.

Day 50: Who Wants To Go Camping?

Today was one of the more fun days I have had with the boys in some time. It was raining all day, so that meant I had to get creative. I did not want Harry just watching TV shows and getting annoyed that he could not go out and ride his bike. The idea came to me this morning. We were going camping.

Harry does not go to preschool on Wednesday and it turns out that tends to be the day they do fun stuff. Today it was going to be PJ and movie day. He was bummed. So I had to make a day just as fun for him here.

My parents bought him a 2-man tent last year and we had yet to use it. I have been waiting for a string on nice days to put it in the yard. Well, I could not wait anymore. We set it up in the living room and went camping for the day.

Pretty cool for Day 50 on the PL. Wow 50 days already? Do I get a gold watch?

Day 49: Bath Time Is Fun Time

It is a rainy Wednesday morning over here, one boy is napping and one is watching a show. The perfect time to catch up on yesterday. I was pretty drained last night for some reason and the thought of sitting at the computer was painful. So what did I do? I sat at the computer last night and instead of blogging, I participated in a Twitter chat with other dads. I had never done that and it was pretty interesting. It certainly was a great way to interact and add to my followers list. Anyways, then I went downstairs and watched the Spurs put a 36-point beat down on the LeBron James and the Heat. Great way to end the day.

The weather was dull and Charlie was pretty content to hang around the house for the day. Not an exciting day on the PL, but it was fun.

Day 48: Riding The Magic School Bus

Monday, Monday, why did you come so darn fast. The weekend was a blitz. Today felt long and I even had moments of feeling like I was losing it. My patience was running thin and thankfully I made it until Katie got home. It was a tiring day on the PL. Charlie had me up before 6 am and then there was little chance to recover as both boys were not that into napping. At least the Magic School Bus kept things calm for a bit. The weather was sunny for the most part and that made for a lot of outside time. It must have worked because once the boys were put to bed, they were not heard from again.

A new week on the PL, here is Day 48

Day 47: Adding Some Flavour With More Herbs

Another great day of weather in Halifax. It was a day to make the most of it however, as we have some nasty rain coming our way for a good part of the weekend. Better start making a list of things to do inside. Not a lot went down today. Oh, unless you look over the fact that I slept in Harry’s bed for a chunk of the night. He came into our room around 4 am and I took him back to bed and stayed. Next thing I know, my wife is waking us up to start the day. I slept, but my hips were really sore when I got up. Harry’s bed sure is not as comfy as ours. So the day was going on little rest. Charlie and I had to head to the grocery store to get formula. That was the big goal of the day, so we were successful. Now I have to see if I have it in me to stay up late to watch Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Good luck to me.

Here is the rest of the who, where, why, what for Day 47 on the PL.
