Trip # 7 – Pulled pork with wood’s sauce

The latest adventure was a special one. My father in law (who loves to cook and eat) was visiting from Toronto and he could not wait to experience the Big Green Egg.

Probably the hardest part of the whole thing was picking what to make. We decided on pulled pork.

Grilled Pizza On The Big Green Egg

When grilling, smoking or barbecuing on the Big Green Egg, meat is usually the way to go. Tasty dishes like beer can chicken, chicken thighs, ribs and steak are all great choices. But what about other options to feed a hungry crowd?

How about grilled pizza? Yes please.

This past weekend we had some friends over and I wanted to try out the new pizza stone I got for my birthday. So, the wife and I teamed up to make homemade grilled pizza on the Big Green Egg.

The plan was my wife would take care of the pizza dough and the homemade sauce and I would take care of the grilling. I was pretty excited as the one fun part of grilling pizza on the Egg is that you get to ramp the heat up to over 600 F. This helps to replicate what a brick oven would do and make it feel like you were eating at a fancy pizza joint.

Now this was the first time for us making homemade pizza dough and cooking pizza like this. So, we were hoping that it would all turn out.

Recipe: Smoked Ham On The Big Green Egg

During my time using my Big Green Egg, I have done mostly chicken and beef. They are a lot quicker than pulled pork or even ribs. So unless you are having guests over, you don’t try something that takes all day. Well, we had some friends over for dinner and as we were planning the menu weeks ago, I wanted to try something new but still something that had little chance of failure.

The worst thing you can do when expecting guests for dinner is to do something new that may not turn out. Then you are stuck serving food that you are not proud of, or you just give up and order pizza. I know the classics such as beer can chicken or chicken thighs would have been a hit, but it would have been pretty boring for me.

The answer turned out to be smoking a 10 lb. ham. Based on how much we all enjoyed it, I was glad I decided to ham it up.

Big Green Egg Weekly: What You Need To Start Smoking

The last time that plate setter will be white ever again. It looks so pretty.

Even though the theme of this blog is supposed to be about parenting and being a dad, Google is telling me that what is bringing eyes to the yard is the Big Green Egg. The amount of searches and clicks on Big Green Egg related recipes and photos is starting to take off.

So of course, that is why every Tuesday I will be posting the Big Green Egg Weekly. This will include tips, stories, recipes and any other news I have seen from the BGE world.

This week, I want to list all of the must-haves to get going with your Egg. The gadgets, accessories and extras for an Egg are endless and pricey. Once you buy one, odds are high you won’t have a lot of extra cash lying around.

So what do you REALLY need to start smoking?

Chicken Wings On The Big Green Egg

chickenwings-2

Here is a meal that is perfect for Father’s Day. Tangy and sweet chicken wings cooked low and slow on the Big Green Egg.

I have not cooked wings yet and over the first year of having an Egg, I have to say, chicken is probably my favourite meat to cook. So it is kind of shocking that I have not tried wings as I sure love eating them.

Part of my hesitation was always the preparation of cutting the tips off. I just did not enjoy it.

So when I saw packs of chicken wings with the tips already cut off on sale at the grocery store last weekend, I went for it.

My family and I are sure glad I did.

Here is my recipe for chicken wings on the Big Green Egg.

Big Green Egg Weekly: Happy Egg-A-Versary To Us

Outside of my kids and my wife, the Big Green Egg is one of my most favourite things.

It was just over a year ago when that beautiful green piece of art was dropped on my deck. The joy and great food it has provided us cannot even be measured. The price was steep but in a short time, the Big Green Egg has already paid for itself (in my opinion).

I am a lucky guy. My wife bought it for me last year after I toilet trained our son. Yep, you heard me. She bought me the best BBQ/smoker you can buy to show her appreciation. So not only do I have the best wife going, I also have the best BBQ.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Big Green Egg, it is an all-in-one cooking machine. It is a smoker, a grill, an oven and a piece of art. Regardless of whether there is smoke funneling out of it, people stop and stare at in on my deck. I should mention there is a walking trail behind our house.

The smell of meat and wood chips radiates for what seems like miles. Neighbours certainly know when I am cooking a feast.
