Better Call Saul never won an Emmy

Did you watch the Emmy’s last night? Probably not. We did. It wasn’t a bad show. There were some funny moments, a lot of TV nostalgia and zero surprises on who won in the end. Some of the categories seemed so telegraphed on who they wanted to win.

I read this morning that it was a confusing show because it was 4 months later than normal due to various strikes, and the submission window went all the way back to the summer of 2022.

Black Bird and Obi Wan were nominated.

The other part I don’t get about the Emmy’s is how a show gets nominated. Because based on last night, there were only like 9 shows on TV over the last year and a half.

We watch a lot of TV in our house. Well, at least my wife and I. The kids watch almost zero TV, but that’s another story for another day. For my wife and I, TV is one of our things. It’s what we do most evenings and for me in particular, it’s what I do for a lot of my down time. Thankfully in 2024, there are an endless amount of shows and movies to watch. But is it more about quantity than quality? It’s certainly going that way and funny enough, we are starting to pay more for less.

It doesn’t seem like that long ago that it was impossible to keep up with all the latest productions. Then it was becoming annoying that new steamers were popping up and each had their own price for entry. The good shows were spread pretty evenly across all platforms so to not have FOMO, you tried out the free week and in the end, signed up for another service. Sound familiar?

My Favourite TV Shows of 2023

Succession was one of my favourite TV Shows of 2023.

Recently my wife was commenting on the fact that I have not added a post to Like a Dad in a long time. It’s true. I don’t think about it anymore and I forget how much fun it can be to write something. Every now and then I think about a topic that would work and then I just don’t write.

So, to get something up before the end of the year I needed a topic that was pretty easy to put together, but also one I have a lot of thoughts on.

Then I started seeing the top lists of 2023 start to surface. Of course, that’s an easy one to do. A look back at the year that was. But since I don’t really see that many movies, or have any idea what new music is, I knew there was only one source for a very detailed list.

Parents and Discord – What You Need to Know

As a parent, I knew the day would come that my kids would start talking about music, movies, celebs etc. that I would not know about.

It’s impossible to keep up. But one area I thought I would hold my own and be able to talk the talk, was with technology and online apps.

But that quickly vanished over the past few years and especially since our oldest son added a phone and Chromebook to his life. Now my brain checks out when the boys talk about Minecraft, Among Us and Roblox.

I tried to understand each by creating profiles and playing, but it just never caught on. For the record I am horrible at Among Us.

The latest and maybe the most unknown app to me is Discord. Have you heard of it? If you have young kids or teens, I know you have.

Do you know what it is? What it does? If it’s safe?

You really should because at least in our house it’s becoming the number one way our oldest son communicates with the online world (and us).

Well it’s Mid-March and we are officially a year into this mess known as the pandemic and now the media is pushing the arrival of the third wave. Cool.

Does anyone else feel like March 2020 and March 2021 have merged? Thank goodness I have an Instagram feed to remind me that the last 12 months existed. Seriously, if I close my eyes, I can instantly go back to this time last year and it feels like it is now. We were on the kid’s March Break, or March Broke as I was calling it, and trying to navigate staying busy with the boys.

It’s been a year since signing up for Disney +. It’s been a year since I started playing Red Dead Redemption. It’s been a year since I watched no March Madness.
