Man, the summer is a slow time. I guess that’s why they call it the dog days of summer. August in particular can feel like a snail. July is full of excitement. August the dread starts to set back in. I have not really felt much like writing, and especially coming up with ideas to write about. Between a photo I took while on vacation and this week’s The Bill Simmons Podcast on half-baked ideas, my latest post was born. Random ideas to think about.

We all have so many thoughts and ideas swirling around in our heads that I think it’s important to get them out. Tell someone. No matter how foolish. So please be patient with me as I share some of the ideas that cross my mind from time to time.
- Create better bacon packaging. I dunno, maybe a seal? It’s done with lunch meat, why not bacon?
- Make different sidewalk lanes. One for people in a hurry, one for meandering phone zombies.
- Can the hot dog people and the hot dog bun people get together and come to a standard number, please?
- A fridge drawer specifically for hiding snacks from your kids.
- Grocery stores that put milk and bread near the entrance.
- A better way to package new socks. That plastic connector simply wrecks socks.
- Phone chargers with retractable cords. Cords really irritate me.
- TVs that lower the volume automatically when commercials come on.
- Reusable shopping bags that actually fold back into the size of your fist.
- Alarm clocks that only turn off once the teen’s feet hit the floor (verified by a pressure mat).
- School lunch containers that instantly combust into nothing when lunch is over.
- A homework submission app that notifies parents when an assignment is late (like a real one).
- A dishwasher that won’t close until every dish in the room is loaded into it.
- A leftovers tracking system. Like an app connected to sensors in containers that alert when something’s about to expire.
- Wall outlets with wireless charging pads built in. Better yet, make charging like WiFi, it’s just everywhere.
What do you think? These all seem pretty good. Do you have any to add in the comments?
Before I wrap this up like a package of bacon, I should comment on the photo above. We recently stayed at an Airbnb cottage north of Toronto, and that notebook was in one of the drawers. Now you are probably asking, what was in the book? Was it full of ideas? I certainly was hopeful.
But in fact, it was pretty empty. Only a few pages of Scrabble scores. I should have added a few of my ideas from above now that I reflect.
Oh well. Maybe next time.
