In early 2025, I finally deleted Twitter from my phone. Not in a dramatic rage-quit kind of way—just a quiet “this isn’t good for me anymore” kind of moment. The app that once gave me breaking news, spicy jokes, and Raptors trade drama had become, well… exhausting. Less barbershop banter, more dumpster fire.
So when I heard about Gander, a new Canadian-made social media platform that’s promising a safer, more civil alternative? I was in.
Yes, I’ve already signed up for the beta. And yes, you can too.

So What Is Gander?
Gander is being built right here in Canada by a group of tech leaders who got tired of waiting for the big U.S. platforms to fix themselves. People like Arlene Dickinson and Amber Mac are backing it. This isn’t some guy in his garage—it’s a real, well-funded effort to build a digital community that reflects Canadian values. Think: respectful disagreement, less shouting, and probably no weird billionaire takeover vibes.
It’ll support written posts and videos—no algorithmically cursed doomscroll, and no incentive to post hot takes just for clout. The focus? Safety, collaboration, and actual conversations. Revolutionary, I know.
Why I’m Rooting for It
Because social media used to be fun. It used to feel like a place to connect, share bad dad jokes, post your BBQ, and chirp about the NBA (with love or rage depending on the week).
But in the last few years, it’s become clear that the platforms we use aren’t built for people—they’re built for profit, outrage, and data harvesting. That’s not a tinfoil-hat take. That’s the business model. The current social networks are not great for our overall mental health.
So Gander is doing something refreshing: trying to build something better from the ground up. For us.
Will It Work?
Honestly? I don’t know. Launching a social platform in 2025 is like opening a new coffee shop next to a Tim Hortons drive-thru—it’s bold, risky, and will take a lot of community support.
But if we want better digital spaces, we’ve got to show up for them. Even just to kick the tires. I’m not saying Gander will be perfect—but I’d rather support something that’s actually trying to be better than keep feeding the chaos machine.
Want to Check It Out?
You can sign up for the Gander beta here and get early access. I already did. Figured it’s worth a look before social media becomes entirely unusable.
Look, I’m not here to preach. I still use social media—I just want it to be less gross. And if Gander can help bring back some of the fun without the toxicity, I’ll happily give it a shot.
Also, calling it “Gander”? Chef’s kiss. Because when Canadians want to take a look at something new, we take a gander. Love it.
Oh, and for marketing folk like me, I really enjoyed reading this at the end of their welcome email.
And yep—this email was sent using Canadian-hosted and owned services.
