I’ve been reading James Patterson books for years, and the Alex Cross series has always been my go-to thriller. There’s something about a detective who’s smart, resourceful, and endlessly determined that just hooks me (I still picture Morgan Freeman). These Alex Cross books combine suspense, twisted villains, and edge-of-your-seat action that keeps me turning pages late into the night—even when I really should be asleep. Here are my favourite entries in the series, ranked with their creep factor so you know which ones might make you check over your shoulder.

My Favourite Alex Cross Books
1. Along Came a Spider (#1) – Creep Factor: 8/10
The book that started it all. Alex Cross, detective and psychologist, is pulled into a terrifying case involving the kidnapping of two children from Washington D.C.’s elite. Patterson’s short chapters and punchy sentences make it impossible to put down. You’ll find yourself racing through pages, trying to piece together the puzzle before Cross does. The name “Gary Soneji” will forever be stuck in your head.
2. Kiss the Girls (#2) – Creep Factor: 9/10
Dark, twisted, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. Cross investigates multiple abductions while a cunning killer seems to be playing with him directly. The tension is relentless, and Patterson’s pacing makes it feel like you’re running alongside Cross, trying to keep up. My sister didn’t want to be left alone after reading this one. I recently watched the movie again. Still stands up.
3. Jack & Jill (#11) – Creep Factor: 8/10
Modern Alex Cross at his absolute best. The stakes are high, the clues are cryptic, and the villain is one step ahead at every turn. Patterson’s signature fast pacing keeps the adrenaline pumping, and there are moments that make you literally gasp.
4. Cat & Mouse (#3) – Creep Factor: 8.5/10
Cross faces a serial killer known only as “The Cat,” and it’s a full-on psychological duel. Patterson lays out traps, twists, and mind games that keep you second-guessing every character’s move. This one really tests your nerves.
5. Pop Goes the Weasel (#4) – Creep Factor: 9/10
A psychopathic killer, a city on edge, and Cross racing against the clock. Patterson’s storytelling here is relentless, and the final reveal will make you want to check over your shoulder. One of the more intense early books in the series. I was debating putting this book higher on the list.
6. Roses Are Red (#6) – Creep Factor: 9.5/10
Enter Mr. Smith, one of Patterson’s most memorable villains. The murders are methodical, the suspense is relentless, and Cross is tested in ways that push him to his limits. This one’s a nail-biter from start to finish.
7. Violets Are Blue (#7) – Creep Factor: 9/10
The sequel to Roses Are Red, this book cranks the tension even higher. Cross faces new dangers while old threats continue to loom, and Patterson’s pacing ensures you won’t want to stop reading.
8. Double Cross (#12) – Creep Factor: 7.5/10
Cross gets pulled into a complex web of deception, lies, and unexpected turns. The plotting is clever, the suspense is strong, and Patterson keeps you guessing until the very last page.
9. I, Alex Cross (#20) – Creep Factor: 7/10
A more recent addition to the series. Cross is at the peak of his detective skills, facing threats that feel current and realistic. Patterson modernizes the story while keeping all the elements that make the series compelling.
10. Cross (#17) – Creep Factor: 7.5/10
One of the more personal cases for Cross. Patterson delivers high stakes, tight pacing, and plenty of suspense. This book feels like a culmination of all the elements that make Alex Cross such an engaging series.
