A personal look back at 2016

I noticed during my review of website stats, people were oddly landing on a post from 2016 where I listed off various things I wanted to accomplish that year. With 2025 just starting out, I thought it would be entertaining (to me at least), to see what I actually did check off that year. Resolutions or setting goals to me are a mental game you play against yourself. Whatever helps to motivate you is really what is important.

Anyway, it’s time to take a look at how I did.

2016

Move – We did move into our current home.

Finish House of Cards – Check. Wow, did the show ever vanish into the archives?

Go for an actual checkup at the doctor – I did not. BUT ever since 2018, I go a few times per year.

Catch up on taxes – We did, then we fell behind again.

Install a Nest – We tried, but our heating system at the time did not jive. I never looked into it again.

Start listening to records – Check.

Do what I can to help my boys eat better – Check.

See my good friend Kevin for more than a day – Check, barely. Although I did see him twice in 2024.

See Adele – Check. It was awesome.

Walk both boys to real school – Check. I do miss that.

Go on a real family vacation – This didn’t happen in 2016, but in 2017 we went to a Mexican resort.

Keep the credit/debt down – Ha ha ha ha.

Mount a TV – Yepper.

Go to the NBA All Star Game – That did not happen. It was ok though. Remember how cold it was??

See the Raptors win a playoff series – Check. In fact in 2019, saw them win it all.

Improve my dad brand – Sure?

Continue staying away from pastries – I had a really good run. But I will admit, I am back into pastries.

Lose 15 lbs – Failed in 2016. I did in 2018. Gained it all back.

Go to El Catrin at least three times – I don’t think we went more than once. Although we did go there recently.

Smoke a turkey – Check

Take boys up CN Tower – Nope.

Get the ol’ snip snip as they say – Not that year.

Host dinner parties – I think we did.

Read more books – Check.

Push myself to spend my free time doing more than resting – LOL what does that even mean?

More bike riding – Check.

Use my gift cards – Check.

See the new Star Wars movie – Check.

Do a better job at telling my wife how awesome she is – I am sure I did. But I should do it more.

Stop collecting LCBO bags – We stopped. Then we started again.

Move all my bills to paperless – Check.

Fix the dining room chairs – I did, but they need it again.

Set up point systems for eating and allowance (for the kids) – We did this briefly.

Survive when my wife is away for two weeks – Well obviously I did.

Switch to a cheaper cable package when the new pick what you want starts – I did reduce our cable package but since have added many streaming services that did not exist. So maybe it’s time to revisit this goal.

Stop putting stuff in my Google Keep that I will never finish – I did complete this, but have since built up another list of things I will probably never do.

Build more lego – Check.

Set up KeyPass – Never did.

Put music on my phone – I am not sure what that means. Did I mean download songs? I guess I did that.

Eat more yogurt – I did not.

Looking back, I think I did pretty good.

What about 2025?

Should I do a new list to look back on in several years? Maybe. But I don’t feel like sharing it with you all this time. I have a lot of tiny goals in mind to tackle this year to go with a few giant ones. So let’s leave it at that.

What about you? Do you ever look back at lists you said you wanted to accomplish? Any big goals set for 2025? Would love to hear about it in the comments.
