Recipe: Jalapeño Poppers on the Big Green Egg

poppers on grill

If you’ve ever had people over and wanted to feel like a hero without actually doing that much work, jalapeño poppers are the move.

I don’t mean “they’re good.” I mean, they disappear in minutes. You’ll spend more time prepping them than people will spend eating them. It’s borderline disrespectful.

This is easily one of the best snacks you can make on the Big Green Egg. Minimal effort, maximum payoff, and just enough heat to make people feel like they’re being adventurous without regretting their life choices.

Bonus points for me as my in-laws love them.

Why poppers always win

  • Bacon + cheese + jalapeño is undefeated
  • Bite-sized means people grab 3–4 without thinking
  • Cook fast, so you can keep batches coming
  • Smells ridiculous while cooking (neighbours hate you)

Ingredients

  • Fresh jalapeños
  • Cream cheese (softened)
  • Shredded cheddar (optional but recommended)
  • Bacon (cooked and crumbled)
  • BBQ rub or simple salt + pepper

Prep

  • Slice jalapeños in half lengthwise
  • Remove seeds and membranes (unless you enjoy chaos)
  • Mix bacon bits, cream cheese, shredded cheddar, and seasoning
  • Fill each jalapeño half generously

Big Green Egg Setup

Cook

  • Place poppers on the grill and cook for 25–35 minutes, until:
  • Cheese is bubbling
  • You’re already getting asked, “Are those ready yet?”

Pro Tips (this is where people mess it up)

  • Make the bacon bits crispy before going on the BGE
  • Space them out so they crisp instead of steaming
  • Wear gloves when handling jalapeños unless you enjoy learning hard lessons
  • Make them in advance and let them chill in the fridge if needed. Let them get to room temp about 30 minutes before you need to cook.

Variations

  • Add cooked sausage to the filling for extra chaos
  • Drizzle with BBQ sauce near the end for a sweet finish
  • Swap cheddar for pepper jack if you want more heat

Enjoy the Heat

You can make a lot of impressive things on the Big Green Egg. Whether it is brisket, ribs, or beer can chicken.

But if your goal is to make something that people actually won’t stop eating, it’s these babies.

Make more than you think you need. Then double it. Still won’t be enough.
