Every Friday I fire off a list of things I think you need to know. Want me to know something in return? Leave it in the comments.
Why are we afraid of snow? – It’s mid February and in Canada, that is known as winter. Yesterday Toronto had some snow. The first real snow of the entire season. In our area it was many 2-3 cm. But if you turn on the news or read social media, we apparently had a major snowstorm. Was it a storm? What counts as a storm these days? It snowed. In fact it was that big movie like snow that is peaceful and relaxing. I went for a walk. It was actually refreshing. If you want to see what as snowstorm is, maybe check out what’s going on in Atlantic Canada. Over the years, we have become more and more unable to deal with winter. Not because people are incapable. It’s because in my opinion the media has conditioned us that way. Putting the fear of God into everyone when there are flurries. Like I said, this was the first real snow of the winter. Instead of covering traffic accidents, transit pulling stops and all the negatives of what snow can do. Why not pump the breaks a little and treat it as normal. It’s winter. This is what happens. It snows, we clear the snow, we all do our best to deal with the snow and maybe we should try and enjoy winter. Look at kids as soon as it snows. They are in their gear and sledding down hills. Sure there is some inconvienence, but that’s life.
New TV – It’s always exciting to catch wind of future TV shows. This week I saw a poster for Clipped. FX’s Clipped takes you behind the scenes of a notorious NBA owner’s racist remarks, captured on a tape heard around the world. Based on the hit ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs, this limited series charts the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape’s impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league. Can I say, Laurence Fishburne playing Doc Rivers is perfect. This comes out in June.
Mega long weekend for some – Today is a PA Day for the TDSB, so that means the kids are home. On top of that, it is Family Day in Ontario on Monday. That means a nice 4 day weekend for the boys. It’s a very different set up than in previous years. Now they kind of take care of themselves. No plans are needed. The parents just keep on doing their thing while the kids sleep late, do things with their friends and have a nice day away from the grind of school. In past years there would be trips to the mall, or to see the sharks or even just a long walk together. Now it’s just keeping track of where they are.
NBA All-Star Weekend – Forget the dunk contest, the game or even any of the drama of the NBA. There is only 1 thing worth tuning into this weekend. It’s two of the best shooters on the planet getting set to square off on the main stage at Lucas Oil Stadium. Steph curry against Sabrina Ionescu. I have not been this excited for an event at All-Star weekend in some time. I also like that both are very much into it and not backing down. They both want to win bad.
Happy Family Day weekend to everyone in Ontario. Don’t forget, it’s free fishing!
