Every Friday I fire off a list of things I think you need to know. Want me to know something in return? Leave it in the comments.
Good morning and happy Friday. We made it. February is over and we can start the march towards spring. Although the way winter has gone in Toronto, one could argue we are already in spring. This weekend is supposed to be sunny and over 10 C every day.
Looking at our backyard, it’s like all the plants are very confused. Not buried in snow and ice, so much daily sun and warmer air.
March is such a boost for the mind. To go with spring, it’s that time of year to start planning summer vacations, summer plans for kids, March Madness, tax refunds (for some), and daylight savings time.
It also means more desire to get outside and fire up the Big Green Egg.
But all in due time. Let’s focus on the present.
New TV – This week’s entry for new TV worth watching is brought to you by FX. Have you seen promos for Shogun? I watched the first 2 episodes on Disney Plus and can already say it is a hit. To simplify it, the show feels like a Japanese Game of Thrones adventure. Set in the 17th Century, the story is told from the perspective of British hero John Blackthorne, a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai, while being used as a pawn in Japanese leader Toranaga’s struggle to reach the top of the ruling chain or Shogun. While FX is known for producing amazing dramas, this show looks like it was made by HBO and had the budget of Apple. While you need to get used to the subtitles, it certainly checks the boxes for what could be the next great TV adventure.
Food for thought – For those who read weekly, you know I have been a fan of Dinner Time Live on Netflix. This week was the last episode (for now?) and one of the guests is a personal fave of mine, Bill Simmons. But the real star of this episode was one of the dishes David Chang made.
Did you see that list of food all stuffed inside? On the show they were calling it the Avengers but for food.
Jon Stewart and Dipper – For those who didn’t see it, I apologize. I need to reference how Jon Stewart ended his show this week. He said goodbye to his dog, Dipper. It’s a hard one to watch but so good at the same time. Anyone who has had a dog or a pet knows the feeling. His moment of Zen was perfect.
A Golden Throwback – I saw online that yesterday was 14 years to the day when Canada beat the USA for the Gold Medal at the Vancouver Olympics. Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal in OT.
But what is reminds me of is that is the day Harry had his first solid food. We were living in our Halifax house, the game ran late and then we came up to feed Harry. You will know by the background of the video.
Finally, looking towards what else March brings. This month, my long, long, long-time friend is having his big birthday. I won’t who, I won’t say how old, but for those who know me, you will figure it out. I really got caught up in the sad news of Richard Lewis passing. Not because he was a fave of mine, but because of the relationship he and Larry David had on and off screen. They were besties. They drove each other crazy. They would take any chance there was to burn each other. But they were besties. Just makes you appreciate being lucky enough to have one.
