Dads That Are Owning That Parenting Thing

Buzzfeed recently posted a list called “24 people who are really nailing this parenting thing“, and many of the photos were of dads.

Since at Like A Dad, we love showing off those doing parenting like a dad, we grabbed a few of the images to show you here.

Of course we want you to go and check out the full list because Buzzfeed kills it when they put a list together.

Here are just a few of our faves.

Tired, Can’t Blog, Must Be Doing A Good Job At Parenting?

Good afternoon all, how goes the battle? Have you ever wondered how many mom and dad bloggers seem to have all day long to write posts, share photos and engage on social media? Are they super-talented on the multi-tasking front? Are they ignoring their kids and letting the TV babysit them?

I often wonder, because to be honest, the last few days, I have been way too tired to blog or even think about sitting at the computer to write.

Our two boys are just bringing it, when it comes to keeping us busy.

So what is the secret? What are other parents doing or not doing? I would love to get the goods. This blog would be so much better if I had several hours a day to create content, engage on social media and do the necessary networking it takes to build a top-notch website.

Even writing this short post to let the search engines I am still alive is taxing because I know at any moment, one of the boys is going to wake up and need feeding, attention, play time or a snack.

Why Do I Blog? My Brain Would Explode Otherwise

Recently in a Halifax blogger Facebook group that I am part of, someone asked why we blogged. Why did we spend so much time writing posts and sharing with everyone our thoughts. Was it for money, fame, to kill time, to be part of a group or even a way to avoid doing something else. Everyone has their reasons and I thought it was an interesting question to answer.

So I decided to air my thoughts on why I blog. Here goes.

Who Do I Blog?

Blogging has been a part of my daily life ever since I first started using MSN Spaces way back in the early 2000’s. Yeah, remember that archaic tool that let you fill in areas with content and drag them around? It all started because I had moved away from home and it was the easiest way to keep my mother updated on what I was up to.

This was before Twitter, Facebook and all the other social sites. MSN messenger was pretty big and 911 had to even happened yet.

It was great. I could update my mother on my life in Toronto, while not having to spend a lot of time on the phone. I have never been a fan of the phone.

That was where the “blogging” started. Of course that was only the beginning and I did not even know it was blogging to be honest. It was more of a daily newsletter that very few people read.

Over time I grew with the medium. I did blogger, the free WordPress site and finally in 2008, I made the jump to the self-hosted WordPress software.

Hasbro Invites Kids And Fans To Create New Transformers Character

One of the fun perks of doing the dad blogging thing is that you get contacted by companies who want your help as an influencer for their brand and products.

Recently I was asked to partner up with Hasbro to help them get the word out for their new toys. That means getting free products to try and review as well as inside information on upcoming releases.

Already I have been asked to review some Iron Man 3 products which will be reviewed in the coming weeks and there was this press release that came out at the end of last week.

Hasbro wants help from kids and us, to help them create a new transformer character.

Here is the official release:

Top 5 Things Every New Dad Has To Know

Being a new dad can be stressful and confusing. No matter how many books you say you read or how many times to heard your wife tell you something, it does not become real until you see that little gooey head pop out.

Then, you wish you had prepared more, like making sure the DVR was properly tricked out with your show schedule.

I have been a new dad twice and yes the second time, is much easier but you still have a few things you need to remember from the things you needed to know the first time around.

I want to share some of those with all the guys out there who are about to become a new dad. Don’t roll you eyes or say to yourself, not in my house, because it is intel like this that will help you survive the many battles ahead.

This list only deals with the first month or so. I can’t even pretend to comment on what happens after the age of three.

Want to learn about that? There’s a dad for that.

So back to the list.

Top 5 Things Every New Dad Has To Know

Here are 5 things every new dad has to know, to not only be a good dad, but to not end up being road kill on the parenting superhighway.

Like A Dad Is On Instagram

Instagram was nothing more than a running joke for me as I never got to use it living in a BlackBerry world. It seemed to be full of people taking photos of their dinner. But then I was up and running on my new Samsung Galaxy and I got hooked on the photo sharing service pretty quick.

So that means Like A Dad has a very active Instagram page full of filtered photos of the kids, cooking and whatever else this dad runs into over the course of a day.

Older Dads May Increase Child’s Health Risks

From CBS News

The decline of women’s reproductive capabilities after the age of 35 is a well known medical tenet but potential fathers have long been immune from age limitations on reproduction. However, Time magazine is taking a look at several studies that indicate older fathers can present as many or more medical issues as older mothers.

In 2012, a study in Nature found that the rates of autism and schizophrenia significantly increases in the babies of older fathers — the risk doubles for every 16.5 years of paternal age. Another study in the American Journal of Men’s Health associated paternal age with preterm birth and low birth weight.

Now how is that for news. You are already feeling tired and behind for being an older dad, now you might be passing on health problems.

It says now 35 is also considered the worrying age for men as well. As a man who has had two boys since being 35, this kind of study is not exactly what you want to read. At the same time, it is just a study and until they say it is almost a sure thing, I am not going to worry about it. A person’s life is being extended like never before and modern medicine is making it more normal to have kids later in life.
