Did you watch the Emmy’s last night? Probably not. We did. It wasn’t a bad show. There were some funny moments, a lot of TV nostalgia and zero surprises on who won in the end. Some of the categories seemed so telegraphed on who they wanted to win.
I read this morning that it was a confusing show because it was 4 months later than normal due to various strikes, and the submission window went all the way back to the summer of 2022.
Black Bird and Obi Wan were nominated.
The other part I don’t get about the Emmy’s is how a show gets nominated. Because based on last night, there were only like 9 shows on TV over the last year and a half.
I can’t argue with the success of Succession, The Bear and Beef, but did The White Lotus need so many nominations. There are more TV shows out there now than ever before, but for some reason so many go missed for nominations and wins.
Where was The Righteous Gemstones? Where was Reservation Dogs? I personally don’t understand how shows like Silo, For All Mankind, anything made by Taylor Sheridan and Slow Horses didn’t even exist last night.
Then, let’s look at shows that didn’t win. It was clear that Sarah Snook was going to win, but this really was Rhea Seehorn’s award. It was supposed to be the big win for Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul.
Then I learned that Better Call Saul, one of the best shows on TV in the last few decades, never won an Emmy. The show had 53 nominations over the 6 seasons it aired and never won a single award. Not Bob, Not Vince, not anyone. That’s shocking to me. I guess they were like the NBA’s Eastern Conference while LeBron James going to every NBA Finals.
I know the Emmy’s is not perfect. But the best shows to tend to win. I just don’t understand how so many good shows, writers, actors etc. are ignored for nominations and wins.
It was a lot of fun to see The Bear win for best show and the whole cast was up on stage. This time around it was Matty Matheson who was picked to speak on behalf of everyone and it was classic Matty.
If you watched, what moments did you like? If you didn’t watch, what TV shows do you think got missed?
With Succession gone, it will be interesting to see what TV show takes the mantle when the awards air again in September.
Curious about what shows to catch up on that came out in 2023? Well I have a list for that. I did a top list of my favouite TV shows of 2023.
As I am not quite at my 500 words for the day, I will quickly go over what I am watching currently.
- True Detective: Night Country (Crave)
- Peaky Blinders (Netflix)
- Loudermilk (Netflix)
- Recently finished a rewatch of Band of Brothers to get ready for Masters of Air that comes out on January 26th.
