Friday Newsletter – In Masai we still trust

Every Friday I fire off a list of things I think you need to know. Want me to know something in return? Leave it in the comments.

The art of the presser – Nobody does a press conference better than the President of the Toronto Raptors, Masai Ujiri. For several years, he has given memorable talks about the team, his work in Africa and life in general. It’s hard not to hang on every word. Yesterday was no different when he addressed the media to talk mostly about the Pascal Siakim trade. He was emotional, candid, real and even got in some jokes. He’s respectful to each media member and he doesn’t give the impression he is blowing smoke up our ass. The deals he had to make over the past few weeks have been hard on him and he showed it. I was not a huge fan of the deal but after listening to Masai, I’m back in. I believe once again. It’s long, but a great watch/listen.

New TV – I have to admit, I am pretty excited for Masters of the Air. Ever since Apple announced last year they were working on a show similar to Band of Brothers, I was all in. I am trying really hard to keep expectations in check because it is a lot to live up to. Band of Brothers is one of the great examples of story telling we have ever seen on TV. I recently did a rewatch and it still holds up. I’m slightly worried of a big star like Austin Butler being cast. But if I use Greyhound as an example of what Apple can do, it could be amazing. Plus Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are part of it. The first episode “airs” on January 26th.

Podcasting – This is not breaking news, but Smartless is one of my favourite podcasts. So imagine my delight when recently it popped up that the guest was one of my new favourite comedians – Mike Birbiglia! The guys went much deeper into his sleep walking story and I learned some cool things about Mike, like the TV shows he tried out for in the past and never got. Take an hour and listen.

Food for thought – Do you ever feel like you are being watched? Or that your phone is recording your life and sharing it with others. Lately, I have been thinking Matty Matheson has been keeping an eye on me. For weeks, Matty and I have been on this weird run of cooking the same thing. I will make it, and then it appears on his Youtube channel? Coincidence? 3 such dishes were baked ziti with meatballs, chicken enchiladas and pizza soup. I am not going to complain. Great minds think alike.

Here are photos of my versions of these recipes.

X facts – So what is the talk of X this week? Oh there is a lot. But the thing I took away is – why do NFL dudes hate Taylor Swift so much? The anger that is spewed over a few seconds of a successful woman having fun it crazy. Then the next night Eminem is doing the same thing and nothing? I don’t get it. There are a lot of men that are certainly feeling threatened by it like watching football is their safe space to be a man.

Winter months, great time to declutter – In your house, where is your space where crap goes to live forever? Out of sight, out of mind? A closet, a bin or maybe a garage if you have one? In our house, we have 1 drawer in the kitchen that has never had a purpose. No, this isn’t a junk drawer. We have an official drunk drawer. I know what is in there. No, we have a second drawer that has become home to everything left over from take out orders. Forks, napkins, condiments and more. This week I opened this hoarding delight and said no more. The drawer is now home to actual things we use in the kitchen like knives, a scale and more.
