9 Common Mistakes When Smoking Ribs on the Big Green Egg (And How to Avoid Them)

I’ve smoked a lot of ribs on my Big Green Egg. Like, a lot. In fact, I think it’s the first thing I ever cooked on my new toy. And most of the time? They turn out great — tender, smoky, with that perfect bite. But every once in a while… not so much. Maybe the fire acts up. Maybe I’m distracted by a basketball game. Maybe I just missed a step I’ve done a hundred times. Whatever the reason, even experienced cooks mess up. That’s just the life of BBQ — sometimes it sings, sometimes it stings.

A Like A Dad Update – 13 years later

Back in the heyday of blogging, it was very common to see endless blogs teaching people how to build a blog. There would be tips on POV, content, templates, what CMS to use, and of course, the results. That meant stats. Listing off how much traffic, comments, and overall engagement you were getting. It was the secret sauce to building a following. Show people how it is done and have the goods to back it up. Having authority was also the way to climb the ranks (especially Google). Those days are long gone. Blogging is still a thing, but there are far fewer people showing off how to be a “blogger” than there used to be. Now it’s pick any get-rich-quick scheme that has some kind of paid course and endless drip email campaigns.

So why am I telling you all this? Well, I thought today would be a good day to take a peek behind the curtain and give you a Like A Dad update.

Now, before you roll your eyes and assume I’m forcing my kids into some wholesome sitcom fantasy, let me be clear—I absolutely am. Getting your teens to engage in family activities is like convincing a cat to take a bath. But once you lure them in (usually with bribes), something magical happens.

Raising Career-Ready Teens: A Dad’s Guide to Future-Proofing Our Boys

Let’s face it, fellow dads—raising teenagers today feels like trying to teach a cat to fetch. Especially when it comes to preparing them for the future. I’ve got two teen boys, and while they can navigate a gaming console blindfolded, ask them about their career plans, and suddenly, it’s crickets. I get it, I had no idea when I was their age.

But here’s the deal: it’s our job to help them bridge the gap between “I have no idea” and “I’m ready for what’s next.” So, how do we do that without sounding like a broken record or a career counselor on repeat?
