Friday Newsletter – The all Toronto edition

Every Friday I fire off a list of things I think you need to know. Want me to know something in return? Leave it in the comments.

It’s Jamaican Patty Day – I love Jamaican beef patties. But I had no idea there was an actual Jamaican patty day in Toronto. Well it’s today. Here is the back story. 39 years ago Toronto authorities determinded that the term “beef patties” was too misleading when referring to the tasty Jamaican patties. They said vendors could no longer call them beef patties. As you can imagine, it did not go over well. It created some serious negotiations between the city and Jamican beef patty vendors. Eventually the vendors won the right back to call them beef patties. Guess what day that happened? Yep, February 23. So that is why in the city of Toronto, today is known as Jamaican Patty Day. Another little tidbit I did not know – Toronto consumes more beef patties than anywhere else in the world other than Jamaica. This is just another reason why Toronto rules.

New TV – Keeping with the theme of Toronto rules – last night was the first episode of Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent. It airs on CityTV and we watched it with a normal amount of anticiapation. Was it great TV? No. But it wasn’t bad. I think the hardest part is they really just dropped us into the world without knowing much about the characters and who is who. The city references were strong.

  • Royal Canadian Yacht Club Island Club.
  • A cottage in Muskoka.
  • Toronto Harbour.
  • Marie Curtis Park.
  • Lake Ontario.
  • Island Airport.
  • Scarborough Bluffs.
  • Cherry Beach.
  • Woodbine Beach
  • Toronto’s Little India area on Gerrard Street East.
  • Infamous adult entertainment club Filmore’s Hotel.
  • Private home on Millbank Avenue near Bathurst and St. Clair.
  • Basketball court in the Moss Park neighbourhood.
  • Nathan Phillips Square and Old City Hall.

There were also a lot of shots from inside towers downtown that were hard to know exactly where, but you recognized the large signs like Citi Bank and Telus. I don’t know if we are going to make this show must TV watching, but I do admit that it was wild to see a show so well known as Law & Order set in Toronto. It was also wild to see Toronto actually being Toronto instead of it being New York City. I head the Rob Ford story is episode 4, so we all know that will get good ratings.

Mega long weekend for some – Today is a PA Day for the TDSB, so that means the kids are home. On top of that, it is Family Day in Ontario on Monday. That means a nice 4 day weekend for the boys. It’s a very different set up than in previous years. Now they kind of take care of themselves. No plans are needed. The parents just keep on doing their thing while the kids sleep late, do things with their friends and have a nice day away from the grind of school. In past years there would be trips to the mall, or to see the sharks or even just a long walk together. Now it’s just keeping track of where they are.

Kyle is back – Toronto’s favourite adopted son returned to the hardwood last night playing with Nick Nurse and the Philadelphia 76ers. While the Sixers lost, Kyle showed his value, being the only plus player on the team and also taking a violent elbow to the head which gave him 6 stiches. But in classic Lowry form, he returned to the game and kept playing. I think he is going to have impact on this team.

Police finally see – Have you seen the incident of the police car almost running over the woman crossing the street? It was just south of King and Dufferin, not far from our house. Well finally the police are admitting the truth – that it actually happened LOL.

That is it for today. For those not in Toronto, I apologize for today’s newsletter. But you know what – I need to represent my city. It gets a lot of negative press and all well earned. But the city also has a lot of positive things going on. That’s a wrap. Have a great weekend.
