Halifax Seaport BeerFest: Atlantic Canada’s largest beer festival celebrates 7th year in Halifax, August 9 & 10 2013

(Halifax, NS) – Named Festival of the Year in Halifax’s FACES magazine, the Halifax Seaport BeerFest: Atlantic Canada’s largest beer festival returns for its 7th year. This year the event will take place at the Cunard Centre (961 Marginal Road) on Halifax’s waterfront, Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10.

Attendees can sample over 200 local, regional and international beers and ciders at three sessions over two days. The first session is Friday evening from 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., the second is Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., and the final is on Saturday evening from 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Guests are also able to purchase great beer-friendly food from local restaurants and the new “food truck patio”, enjoy live local music and overlook the Halifax Harbour from Pier 23.

Special guest this year is Carlow Brewing Company founder, owner and beer expert, Seamus O’Hara. In 1996, O’Hara founded Carlow Brewing Company in Ireland and after spending a couple of years experimenting with recipes and finding brewing equipment, his first products hit the market in 1998. His company was one of the first craft breweries in Ireland and was launched at a time when major breweries heavily dominated the market. Over the past 15 years the company has developed a range of beers and are best known for O’Hara’s Irish Stout and O’Hara’s Irish Red. Taking inspiration from the international craft beer community, the company has also launched Irish Pale Ale, Double IPA, along with limited editions of Irish whiskey barrel aged beers and various seasonal products.

In 2011, O’Hara co-founded the Irish Craft Beer Festival with Bruce Mansour, co- organizer of the Halifax Seaport BeerFest, and together they have produced several very successful craft beer events in Ireland. As part of the Halifax Seaport BeerFest, O’Hara will host a guided tour for media and be on hand at each session to answer questions from attendees. He will also be the keynote speaker at the Brussels Rare Beer Dinner on August 8. More details on this event to be announced soon.

“I am really looking forward to attending the Halifax Seaport Beer Festival which I have heard so much about,” said O’Hara. “It’s a great opportunity to sample lots of great craft beers and to maybe pick up a few lessons on festival organization that we can bring back to Ireland!”

Recognizing O’Hara and Mansour’s involvement, the event will host an Irish Craft Beer Village, featuring over 25 unique beers direct from Ireland. Specialty pavilions will also return from Ontario, Quebec and Maine. New producers Boxing Rock and Big Spruce are two of several new local breweries committed to sampling at the festival along with Maritime favourites Picaroons, Rogues Roost and Garrison. All will be joined by national brands and European imports to show the quality and diversity that makes today’s beer market so interesting.
